Tony Bennett Won Every Single Emmy Known to Man This Year, Because Tony Bennett is the Man. And Oh Yeah, He's Got A New Record Out, Too.

Tony Bennett’s artistry will be celebrated this season when Tony Bennett Sings The Ultimate American Songbook Vol. 1, which arrived in stores September 25th on RPM Records/Columbia/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAIN¬MENT.
The Ultimate American Songbook Vol. 1 is a dream project for Tony Bennett, who personally chose the 15-song program from his Columbia repertoire. Literally hundreds of singers have recorded versions of these songs over the years, but Tony Bennett is in the rare class of artists who actually took part in many of the original presentations. The songs on this definitive collection of popular standards cover three distinct decades of recording by Tony Bennett on Columbia:
The 1950s: 1958’s “Ev’ry Time We Say Good¬bye” originally from the 1944 Cole Porter Broadway musical, Seven Lively Arts; and 1959’s “Taking A Chance On Love” from the 1940 Vernon Duke Broadway musical, Cabin In The Sky.
The 1960s: 1962’s Live At Carnegie Hall version of the 1934 Cole Porter gem, “Anything Goes”; 1962’s “You’ll Never Get Away From Me” from Stephen Sond¬heim’s 1959 Broadway musical, Gypsy; then a pair from Tony’s 1964 album When Lights Are Low – Fats Waller’s “Ain’t Misbehavin’” which dates to 1929, and the Gus Kahn/Isham Jones chestnut, “It Had To Be You” from the 1932 RKO film, Show Business; the 1966 recording of Ray Noble’s “The Very Thought Of You” from 1934; 1967’s “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” which dates back to the 1937 Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers RKO film, Shall We Dance; and an undated ’60s session with the Dave Brubeck Quartet on Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer’s “That Old Black Magic,” from the 1942 Paramount film, Star Spangled Rhythm.
The 1990s: Three tracks from 1992’s Sinatra tribute Perfectly Frank, which brought Tony his first Grammy Award in 30 years, starting with the Gershwins’ “A Foggy Day” from the 1937 RKO film, A Damsel In Distress, and 1938’s “I’ll Be Seeing You” and “You Go To My Head,” all three of which are associated with the Columbia recordings of Billie Holiday, the primal vocal influence on Sinatra and Bennett; 1997’s “She's Funny That Way” from the tribute album to Billie, Tony Bennett On Holiday; and from that same year, Tony’s contribution to the My Best Friend’s Wedding movie soundtrack album, Jerome Kern’s “The Way You Look Tonight,” yet another song associated with Billie; and from 1994’s RIAA platinum two-time Grammy Award-winning MTV Unplugged comes the duet with k.d. lang on “Moonglow,” the sixth song in this series associated with Billie Holiday.

I Never Needed Anybody's Help in Anyway...

Apple Corps Ltd have announced the eagerly anticipated DVD release of The Beatles’ second feature film ‘Help!’ on October 30th which will be marketed and distributed by EMI Music.

Directed by Richard Lester, who also directed the band’s debut feature film ‘A Hard Days Night’, ‘Help!’ made its theatrical debut in 1965. The story follows The Beatles as they become passive recipients of an outside plot that revolves around Ringo's possession of a sacrificial ring, which he cannot remove from his finger. As a result, he and his bandmates John, Paul and George are chased from London to the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas by religious cult members, a mad scientist and the London police.

In addition to starring the Beatles, ‘Help!’ has a witty script, a great cast of British character actors and features 7 classic Beatles tracks, including:

• ‘Help!’
• ‘You're Going To Lose That Girl’
• ‘You've Got To Hide Your Love Away’
• ‘Ticket To Ride’
• ‘I Need You’
• ‘The Night Before’
• ‘Another Girl’

Talkin' 'Bout Chest Hair, Talkin' 'Bout Crazy Gold Medallions

Whenever I think of Bee Gees, I think of the above. Normal people would think of Saturday Night Fever, I imagine, but not me. This is just too funny and Saturday Night Fever - not so funny, if you've watched it the whole way through. Unless you're souless, and enjoy watching people jump off the Brooklyn Bridge after agonizing about their pregnant girlfriend (you bad, bad Catholic boy!)

Anyway, all this chatter leads me to tell you that Rhino has re-released The Bee Gees' Greatest on September 18. All those dog-whistle high-pitched vocals, all on one record!

Gloria in the Bronx!

On Wednesday September 26th, Gloria Estefan will go to her fans in the Bronx for an in-store autograph signing at Starbucks in the Kingsbride Plaza (225th and Broadway, Bronx NY). She will be signing copies of her new Spanish language CD - 90 Millas – available on Burgundy Records/Sony BMG on September 18th.

The autograph signing will last from 5:00pm - 6:00pm.

An in-store in NYC's predominately Hispanic borough of The Bronx is a natural choice as 90 Millas pays tribute to Gloria's Latin heritage with a collection of newly recorded original Spanish language songs celebrating Cuban music and culture. The album also pays homage to the most influential and universally respected Latin musicians of the past fifty years. Some of the artists joining Estefan on this album include Arturo Sandoval, Andy Garcia, Chocolate, India, Cachao, Papo Lucca, Johnny Pacheco, Generoso and many more.

“90 Millas” features the #1 hit single ‘No Llores’ which has topped the Latin Billboard chart for two consecutive weeks.

Like, Yeah Man, Nugs.

I'm no hippie (if you couldn't tell by the above title). I like my shoes and cleanliness too much. I also don't understand the whole obsession with psychedelic music; it frightens me into thinking I'm stuck in a chapter of "Go Ask Alice" and my face is melting in a handful of Mandrax. But for fans of that kind of stuff, you'll enjoy this:

Rhino Entertainment will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love with the release of Love Is The Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970 4-CD Box Set on September 18, 2007.
Forty years ago the world turned its ears toward San Francisco as a wave of talented bands gave birth to the American counterculture. On September 18, Rhino remembers that magical confluence of time and place with Love Is The Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970, a 4-CD box set of classics and rarities from the golden age of Golden State rock.
San Francisco Nuggets is the last word on one of popular music's defining regional scenes -- though as scenes go, the music it produced is remarkably diverse. The 77 tracks heard here share little beyond an artistic adventurousness long encouraged in the City by the Bay (which was a magnet for free thinkers from the days of the Beats).

Listen Up, Hippie Folk!

SUPAGROUP's FIRE for HIRE!

Merovingian Music will release the new album from Supagroup titled Fire For Hire on September 25, 2007.

The new release is as unapologetic as anything in Supagroup’s history. Shamelessly bowing before the altar of the rock and roll heroes that came before them, Fire For Hire explodes from a tight-fisted, rhythm-and-blues fused core. From the racing guitars and mindless release of opener “What’s Your Problem Now?” to the thunder-struck bottom end of the title track “Fire for Hire” and the pummeling fevered pitch of the closing “Roll In Smokin’,” the 12-track album offers more than its share of hard-rock indulgences. Says Benji Lee, the group’s guitarist, "The last record (Rules) was about being on the road and the constant party that comes with it. This record is like waking up the next morning with a headache, thinking, 'what did I do last night? ...and where are my pants?'"
